The runtime has a USB stack of its own: it takes the laptop's USB controller from the firmware, finds the six devices on it (camera, modem, fingerprint and smartcard readers, Bluetooth, and the external disk Genera boots from), and reads the disk itself, at 108 MB/s. This is the step towards the runtime owning the machine: once worlds and Genera's disks come through these drivers, the firmware can go.
